From the desk of Ralph Kristopher:
“Moody Mountains of Alaska” is a deeply personal collection of photographs that captures the majestic and ever-changing landscapes of Alaska’s alpine peaks and glaciers. Over seven years, with unwavering intent and focus, I journeyed through these remote and rugged terrains, hunting for the perfect confluence of elements to reveal the mountains as I truly see and experience them.
My connection to mountains has been lifelong, a pursuit that has defined my existence. The time I spent away from them was always in service of returning to them, to explore new places and capture their essence. Through decades of photographing mountains, I began to recognize a unique visual pattern in my work, one that stood apart from how others represented these landscapes. As I meticulously edited tens of thousands of images over many years, I gained a profound awareness of my own perspective—a reflection of my personal journey, my relationship with the natural world, and my place within it.
The mountains, like us, weather the passage of time. They bear the scars of storms, the subtle shifts of wind, and the constant interplay of light as clouds roll by and seasons change. My fascination with these interplays, especially the connection between frozen water, glaciers, and the vast open ocean, has shaped my artistic vision. The shadows, the light, the patterns—they are all part of a larger fractal, a visual harmony that resonates deeply with my own awareness of time and existence.
*Moody Mountains of Alaska* is a limited fine art print series that I am thrilled to release, available in a variety of custom finishes and sizes. The craftsmanship in the display is as crucial as the quality of the print itself, and I take extraordinary pride in ensuring that each piece meets my exacting standards. With a photography journey that started years before I even picked up a camera, as a young boy in my grandfather’s darkroom, my deep awareness and experience set a high bar for my work. It is out of respect for myself and a great honor that I can genuinely say I am extraordinarily proud of these images.
These prints are designed to transform your spaces, creating anchors and focal points that draw you and your guests into their depths, away from the distractions of daily life. They evoke deep feelings and inspiration, embodying the spirit of these moody mountains as part of our planetary body. Each image is limited to just 10 editions, and I continue to add to this series as I spend more time in the mountains, whether hiking or flying around the state on assignment.
It is my privilege to honor these fantastically remote, rare locations with thoughtful compositions and a creative, technical vision. Experience these prints on a grand scale—let them take up entire walls, as they were photographed to do. For example, "Chugach Flow," a panoramic piece, measures four feet tall by over 16 feet wide, transporting viewers to a massive glacier near Girdwood, Alaska. "Frequency of the Chugach," the signature piece of the series, reveals a ubiquitous pattern in Alaska’s mountains, inviting you to contemplate the 18,000 feet from the base to the summit, especially in the magnificent images of Denali, captured from over 150 miles away.
Again, it is my honor and sincere privilege to share these planetary portraits with you.
